Brrrr!

Wow. It’s cold. Well, last week definitely. One morning, I had to pull out the good ol’ squeegee to scrape off ice. Yowza! Even at my place, inside, it was in the 50s, without my heaters on.

Anyhoo, sports news has been mighty busy as of late. Locally, there are two main issues – Cal football, and BALCO. Starting with the Bears, man, they got a raw deal. Explain to me how Cal WINS, and Texas DOESN’T play, yet they lose ground in the standings. Sure enough, if we were on the other side, say Cal leapfrogging Texas in the last week, we be rejoicing and singing the praises of voters nationwide. But hey, I’m a Golden Bear and proud of it, and I think our team got robbed.

As far as those performance enhancing drugs go, boy, what a mess. Sheffield, Giambi, and now Bonds. First off, there’s the issue of how in the world did sealed Grand Jury testimony get leaked at all?? Someone with an inside track to the case leaked it out to those reporters at the SF Chronicle. Sounds shady. I know the journalists were trying to break the story of this baseball era, but for that source…a disappointment to his/her profession to be leaking that info. Then again, those leaks are in all industries, so, that’s not cool either.

For Mr. Bonds, I don’t know what exactly to think. Am I to believe that someone who is that meticulous about his training regimen would blindly trust his trainer to ingest substances into his body? Or am I to think that yes, he did know what he was doing, yet did it anyway – even with the legacy of his father and Willie Mays right around him? I don’t know who to believe, but I sure hope he’s telling the truth, however implausible. It’s a bad time for baseball, my favorite spectator sport, and I think it’s gotta get cleaned up, and fast. Regardless of whether or not someone cheated once (Sosa), or repeatedly over a period of time (BALCO guys??), it ruins the integrity of the game. It displays a lack of respect for the fans, their teammates, fellow players, and most of all, themselves.
