So here’s the story. I love Macs. I think they’re totally cool, have sweet designs, a beautiful OS, and definitely a wow factor in a lot of what they do. At the same time, having worked on literally dozens and dozens of them, I know they’re buggy too. And there are some design flaws – like in Marcia’s iBook.
There’s a group of cables (the “reed switch”) that runs through the hinge of the case that, over time, gets pinched and eventually severed, rendering the display very, very faint. And a couple months ago, this happened. Silly me didn’t register that iBook for AppleCare, so we’re out of warranty. And it’s not covered under Apple’s defective logic board program. *sigh* So I call Apple, and boom, $300 repair. Ugh.
I snoop around the web and find people equally as frustrated as I, and behold! Some people have fixed this themselves! And the part costs 20 bucks! Only trouble is, there’s about 48 screws to take out of all shapes and sizes.
Wellp, to finish off the story, I ordered the part for $27 after shipping, and started the monumental task this morning. Five hours later, voila! iBook’s back. Spent 79 more cents on a roll of electrical tape at Radio Shack. Saved 272 buckeroos. My triumph of the day!
Here’s the guts of the iBook, with the display removed:
And here’s that stinking pinched cable!
