Just finished Harry Potter, Goblet of Fire, and while I really liked the book and see how Rowling has grown in her writing style, I must say – I don’t know how this can be qualified as a children’s book anymore. Without giving away anything, all the people who told me Book 4 was much darker were definitely right. If I was a parent, I sure wouldn’t want my kid reading this – especially one with a particularly vivid imagination that could lead to more fear.
What do you think? Too dark? Or not any worse than other types of media these days?

definitely… and the books keep getting darker. yet i keep reading =P
If the fantasy/witchcraft stuff doesn’t concern parents (or anyone for that matter), then perhaps the attitudes, values, and tones instilled should.
I found the movie to be quite weird!(never read the books) But I also was really reminded of how it feels very much like a children’s book though, because of how things get wrapped up and we’re back where we started. Other than there being a Voldemort now. But they sure don’t seem very bothered by it seeing as how he’s just going home now and all…
I think it really would depend on the child. If they are able to think critically and discern that this it’s only a story.
To be honest though, I should be old enough to know better, but I freaked myself out while reading book 5. =P
it is pretty dark
i’m not sure how it stacks up with other children’s material nowadays, but i remember the chronicles of narnia as much tamer…
on a related note, would you rather have your child exposed to the likes of brittney’s bare skin, or rebellion & witchcraft?
oops – that last comment was me!
yeah, well, there’s probably worse stuff out there, and yeah, hopefully kids can discern for themselves. I still liked the book, gory details notwithstanding.
