Friday’s Flip Book (12/18/2009)

Picture 37I’m a constructor. At least that’s what a quick teaching/learning style preference questionnaire taught me, and I think it’s fairly accurate. One of the characteristics of a constructor is a preference for facts, content, and ideas. Marcia likes to point out the craziness of my Google reader, which basically always has more than a thousand articles to read, only a fraction of which I look at and process. Likewise, I’ve usually got a pile of books on my nightstand that I’m reading simultaneously.  So, in an attempt to coalesce at least some of those things that fly through my brain on a weekly basis, I thought I’d jot down at least a handful of those articles, ideas, tech tools, and book thoughts in written form, and I’m calling it a flip book. A few snapshots into this head of mine.

  • One: I just got a copy of Thomas Schreiner’s New Testament Theology, and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. The approach that he tries to take is different from a book by book one (i.e. the Gospels, Acts, the letters, etc.), but a thematic one, that he’s put in the subtitle, “Magnifying God in Christ.” I’m excited to read it, and I’ll post more snippets as time goes on.
  • Two: My friend Ian recently showed me the Kindle iPhone App and all the free books that are available. I think it’s just great, and Marcia and I have been reading A Christmas Carol from it (Dickens uses so many adjectives!), and I found some good finds on the Kindle store that cost zip, like Kent Hughes’ Commentary on Philippians. Pretty sweet if you ask me.
  • Three: Noel Piper wrote recently on why they don’t include Santa in their Christmas celebrations. I’m inclined to agree.
  • Four: Ed Waken writes in a recent post, “I think most people would agree that during Jesus’ three and a half years on earth, that he had one continuous church experience with His disciples.” Good thought.

Peace.
