People often ask me questions about photography, including questions in the “what” and “how” realms. This page is an attempt to coalesce some of those answers in one place.

RECOMMENDED CAMERAS
This is what I would buy if I were getting a camera today (November, 2011) and starting from scratch:
Compact: Canon S95, Panasonic LX-5, or the Olympus XZ-1 (Take your pick: try them out at a store and see which one fits you best. All should yield excellent image quality with fast aperture lenses, a larger imaging chip than most compacts in a still semi-compact package.)
Midsize: Olympus E-PL3 with the 14-42 kit lens and the Lumix 20mm f/1.7 lens (I love Micro Four-Thirds, and the Olympus body has the added bonus of in-body stabilization that Panasonic doesn’t. The Lumix 20mm is outstanding.)
Sub-frame DSLR Option 1: Nikon D7000 plus Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR and 85mm f/1.8D lenses (Great midweight DSLR setup for about $2,500)
Sub-frame DSLR Option 2: Pentax K-5 plus Pentax 15mm f/4 and Pentax 70mm f/2.4 lenses (Great lightweight DSLR setup for about $2,500)
Full-frame DSLR Option 1: Nikon D700 plus Nikon 24mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8D lenses (Outstanding setup for an arm and a leg: around $5,000. Class-leading noise for high ISOs, full-frame)
Full-frame DSLR Option 2: Canon 5D Mk II plus Canon 24mm f/1.4L and 85mm f/1.8 lenses (Outstanding setup for an arm and a leg: around $5,000)
Any of those options would cover about 90% of my photography. It all comes down to cost and weight, really.
